Foodie Diary (September 2024)

My culinary adventures

Two Thai Salads (09-17)

Tonight, I made two of my favorite Thai salads again. One was a “Yam Moo Yor” (ยำหมูยอ), where I cheated a bit and used cooked sausage instead of the traditional Moo Yor. And then I made a “Yam Mama” (ยำมาม่า) with the instant noodles of the same name, ground pork, and hot dogs.

Ma Ho and Massaman (09-13)

Inspired by the latest episode of OTR Food & History, last night I made Thai “Gaeng Massaman Nuea” (แกงมัสมั่นเนื้อ) with beef and potatoes. I also made “Ma Ho” (ม้าฮ่อ) as a snack, which I prepared using the baby pineapple we had at home.

Two Thai Dishes (09-11)

Tonight’s dinner was a delightful fusion of southern and northeastern Thai flavors. I enjoyed a bowl of steamed “Khai Toon Khoey Khem” (ไข่ตุ๋นเคยเค็ม) and a spicy “Laap Gai” (ลาบไก่) salad.

Geang Khae Gai (09-11)

For lunch today, we had another Northern Thai soup, this time a “Gaeng Khae Gai” (แกงแคไก่) with leftover wild pepper leaves, chicken, and baby eggplants.

Gaeng Woon Sen (09-10)

This morning, I prepared a Northern Thai “Gaeng Woon Sen” (แกงวุ้นเส้น) with glass noodles and chicken, which I served at lunchtime.

Two Thai Tomato Dips (09-09)

With the fresh tomatoes from Basel, I decided to explore the world of Thai tomato dips. Tonight, I made both a “Jeaw Makuea Thet” (แจ่วมะเขือเทศ), a fiery Isan-style tomato relish, and a “Nam Prik Makuea Thet” (น้ำพริกมะเขือเทศ) from Northern Thailand.

Three Thai Dishes (09-06)

I cooked a green Thai curry with pork tonight. I used a curry paste from Bangkok for this “Gaeng Khiao Wan Moo” (แกงเขียวหวานหมู), which resulted in a slightly pale but incredibly flavorful dish. To go with it, I had a refreshing “Yam Dok Kachorn” (ยำดอกขจร) salad with Tonkin flowers and a sour mango with a sweet fish sauce dip, also known as “Ma Muang Nam Plaa Wan” (มะม่วงน้ำปลาหวาน).

Pad Dok Kachorn Moo (09-05)

For lunch today, we had a Thai dish called “Pad Dok Kachorn Moo” (ผัดดอกขจรหมู), which is made with pork and Dok Kachorn flower buds.

Thai Dip Tasting (09-04)

Tonight I had a tasting of various Thai dips made with shrimp or shrimp paste. There was a “Jaew Goong” from Esarn, as well as a “Nam Prik Kapi” and a “Lon Kapi” from Central Thailand.

Tom Kati Fak Sai Woon Sen (09-03)

I had a delicious southern Thai “Tom Kati Fak Khiau Woon Sen” (ต้มกะทิฟักเขียววุ้นเส้น) for lunch today. It’s a light and refreshing soup made with coconut milk, winter melon, and glass noodles. I found the recipe in my trusty “big green book”.

Nam Prik and Yam Woon Sen (09-01)

I decided to put a spin on yesterday’s barbecue leftovers by making a satisfying “Yam Woon Sen Khaep Moo” (ยำวุ้นเส้นแคบหมู). Since one of yesteday’s mangoes wasn’t ripe enough for dessert, I turned it into a delicious and spicy “Nam Prik Ma Muang” (น้ำพริกมะม่วง) dipping sauce.
